A joint program with the Irvington Historical Society
Sunday, September 12 at 4:00 PM
Residents and visitors to the lower Hudson Valley are drawn by the region’s colonial and Revolutionary War history, but unknowingly pass by several historic relics hiding in plain sight. Henry Steiner (Sleepy Hollow Village Historian) and Char Weigel (Trustee, The Historical Society Serving Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown) will discuss their research on the milestones of the Albany Post Road. These stones stand watch along Route 9 today just as they did when the likes of George Washington, Lafayette and the many tenant farmers of Philipsburg Manor traveled the road. You will hear stories of mysterious milestone disappearances and reappearances, study historic maps and other sources to correct some milestone myths, and learn which local milestone may be the only one still in its original position.
